Creating InkThink — The Story Behind a New Way of Thinking.

InkThink™ didn’t begin as an app. It began as a frustration — and a vision.

On my desk I have laptop and next to it my tablet with pen.  All I want to do is jot down my To-Do's into a Task list.  Simpe right?  Not so....

For years, I tried various digital planners, notes apps, and PDF templates I could find. They all promised structure, clarity, and creativity. But they all shared the same flaw: They did not combine three key elements for digital productivity:

- Digital Paper - The ability to use a digital pen on a tablet device (e.g. S-Pen, Surface Pen, Apple Pencil) with ink that looks like the real thing. Text is fine but there is something about seeing your scribble and the style and emotion of the cursive strokes.

- Intelligent Ink - Where we are not just scribbling ink on a document or PDF but actually drawing intelligent ink blocks that have dates, ranks, labels etc., and where items can be re-flowed into different intelligent views.

- Mindful Zero Friction- Just like on pen and paper, once you've written it, it's there and off your mind.  No friction about 'convert to text' and then fixing the text, causing you to be interrupted in your daily flow.

None of the tools I tried captured the way I actually think — spatially, visually, and with a stylus in hand.

So I built InkThink.

Not another planner or tasks app, but an innovative pen-first thinking environment designed for people who think with their hands, their eyes, and their intuition. This is the story of how it came to life.

The Birth of Intelligent Ink

InkThink is built on a simple belief:

Ink should be intelligent.

When you write with a stylus, you’re not just jotting notes — you’re shaping thoughts. Your ink should respond to that. It should be able to transform, evolve, and take on meaning.

That’s why InkThink introduces the concept of Intelligent Ink:

A collection of ink strokes that is atomic - representing ideas, tasks, notes, or concepts

- Which can be moved, grouped, transformed, and repurposed, and

- Which maintain the tactile joy and expression of handwriting.

With InkThink we allow to capture Tasks, Notes, Calendar events and Notes on a Canvas - all atomic 'Intelligent Ink' blocks.

Capture a Task - an Intelligent Ink block in InkThink  - which can have a due date set to it, labeled, re-ordered etc.

Introducing Modular Thinking

This is the heart of InkThink — and the future of stylus-first creativity.

What is Modular Thinking?

Modular Thinking is a way of working where your ideas are built from the flexible, Intelligent Ink blocks (modularrather than fixed pages or your notes fixed on a single template.

Modular Thinking means:

  • Your ideas are captured in atomic, individual ink blocks
  • The ink blocks can be displayed in different views
  • Your ink is alive, not static

This is how designers think. How engineers think. How strategists think. How you think. InkThink simply gives you the environment to do it naturally.  Your ideas flow in ink blocks across the app and how you expect.

Why This Matters

  • Thoughts become movable - You’re not stuck in a weekly layout or a rigid planner.  Your ink captures are not just in one a large document which then gets lost in your tablet. Your thought ink blocks move where you need it - shown in day, week, month etc. views like normal calendar items or a task list.
  • Thoughts become intelligent - each block has 'metadata' like due dates, labels, rank position etc.
  • Thoughts become spatial - You think spatially, not linearly - Ink blocks flow in lists, on a canvas, on a calendar.
  • You stay in the flow - No switching modes. No rigid templates. Just think →  ink →  done!  No friction as the system tries to do ink to text recognition and you waste time correcting it, getting you out of flow and disrupted!

This is the future of stylus-first productivity.

From NoteDex to InkThink: An Evolution

Before InkThink, I built NoteDex, a digital index card system used by thousands of thinkers around the world. It taught me something important:

People don’t want more features. They want tools that match how their minds work.

InkThink is the next step — a system built not around cards or pages, but around modular, atomic, Intelligent Ink.

A Thinking Environment, Not an App

InkThink is designed to feel like a creative studio:

  • A blank canvas when you need freedom.
  • A modular system when you need structure.
  • A tactile space where ink has meaning.
  • A visual environment where ideas grow organically.

It’s not just a planner. It’s not a just notes app. And you're not drawing over a simple PDF. It’s an intelligent thinking environment for stylus-first creators.

What’s Next

InkThink is just getting started.

Over the coming months, I’ll be expanding InkThink to include

  • More views for Ink Blocks - e.g. 3 day Week or Quarterly views
  • Journaling, Reading and Planning modules
  • Thinking frameworks, systems and assistants to guide you and help you think
  • Community-suggested modules
  • AI-assisted ink transformations

This is a journey — and you’re early.
